Understanding the area
What is pregnancy pelvic girdle pain (PGP/SPD)
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP)—sometimes called symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD)—describes discomfort around the joints at the front or back of the pelvis during pregnancy.

It may be felt near the pubic bone, hips, lower back, groin or upper thighs, particularly during weight-bearing or uneven movements.

Front: pubic joint
Back: SI joints
Common areas where pregnancy-related discomfort may be felt.
03
Why it may happen
Why pelvic pain may happen during pregnancy.
Pelvic discomfort rarely comes down to one factor. Your posture, joint movement and muscle demand can all change as pregnancy progresses.

01
Posture changes
A changing centre of gravity alters how your spine, hips and pelvis share everyday movement.

02
Pelvic joint movement
Pregnancy-related changes can affect how evenly the joints at the front and back of the pelvis move.

03
Changing muscle demand
Core, hip and gluteal muscles may work differently to support your growing body and daily routine.

Questions mothers ask
Frequently asked questions.
Severe, sudden or concerning symptoms should be discussed promptly with your maternity care provider.
1. Is chiropractic care suitable during pregnancy?
Suitability depends on your individual situation. Pregnancy- adapted positioning and low-force techniques may be considered after an assessment, with referral or coordination when needed.
2. What happens during the first assessment?
We discuss your symptoms and pregnancy timeline, then use gentle, non-invasive checks to understand spinal and pelvic movement. Findings and suitable options are explained clearly before care.
3. How many visits will I need?
There is no one-size-fits-all number. Recommendations, if appropriate, are made after the assessment and depend on your findings, stage of pregnancy and response.
4. Will I need an X-ray?
We do not routinely use X-rays during pregnancy. Your assessment is adapted to your pregnancy and individual circumstances.
